Bulawayo Drills for Relief: Government Steps Up Efforts to Address Water Crisis
Bulawayo residents facing acute water shortages can expect a glimmer of hope as the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development (LAFWRD) launches a proactive initiative to ramp up borehole drilling across the city.
Drilling for a Sustainable Solution:
Minister Anxious Masuka, head of LAFWRD, outlined the program's details during a meeting at Bulawayo's Mhlahlandlela Government Complex. The plan is a multi-pronged attack on the water crisis, with a focus on both immediate relief and long-term sustainability:- Identifying Potential Sites: Authorities have embarked on a comprehensive survey, pinpointing 83 potential locations within the city that could hold underground water reserves.
- Rigorous Assessments: Moving with a sense of urgency, 22 of these sites are currently undergoing thorough evaluations by a team of experts. These assessments will determine the suitability of each location for borehole development, ensuring optimal well placement and water yield.
- Immediate Action: The good news for residents is that 15 sites have already been identified as viable for immediate borehole installation. This fast-tracking process demonstrates the government's commitment to providing immediate relief to the city's water woes.
Collaboration is Key:
Minister of State Judith Ncube highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach. While the borehole drilling initiative offers a much-needed solution, addressing Bulawayo City Council's (BCC) outstanding debts is also crucial.![]() |

A Coordinated Approach:
Mayor David Coltart expressed his appreciation for the government's proactive steps. The borehole drilling initiative aligns with the BCC's recent declaration of Bulawayo as a water crisis zone, showcasing a unified effort to combat water scarcity. This collaborative approach, with both the national and local governments working together, demonstrates a strong commitment to finding lasting solutions for Bulawayo's water woes.Technical Expertise for Long-Term Sustainability:
Looking beyond immediate relief, a specialized technical committee has been established to assess Bulawayo's water resources and its ability to withstand potential shortages in the future. This committee is comprised of water management experts who will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the city's water infrastructure, consumption patterns, and potential alternative water sources. Their goal is to deliver strategic recommendations within 100 days to ensure the city's long-term water sustainability. These recommendations could include water conservation measures, rainwater harvesting initiatives, and further exploration of viable sites for borehole development. The LAFWRD's borehole drilling initiative offers a beacon of hope for Bulawayo residents struggling with water shortages. This collaborative approach, coupled with a focus on immediate relief and long-term solutions through the technical committee, paves the way for a more water-secure future for the city.
