Everything You Need To Know About Borehole Drilling In Zimbabwe

Borehole drilling is becoming an increasingly popular option amongst site managers and savvy property owners. It may not be something that you have considered before.

However, if you need access to a fresh and reliable supply of water, it could be the ideal solution for you. In the following blog, we answer your frequently asked questions about water borehole drilling, shedding a little light on this borehole drilling service and how we can be of help here at ProWater Solutions.

What is water borehole drilling? Water borehole drilling (or water well drilling), essentially, involves drilling a hole into the ground to access the water that lies beneath. Once the hole has been drilled, it is cased with steel and a borehole pumping system is typically added to collect the natural water and pump it to the surface.

There are two types of borehole drilling service available, including commercial and domestic, and they are most commonly used in areas with restricted access or poor ground conditions – where it is difficult, or even impossible, to dig the ground with a wheeled drilling rig.

How does water borehole drilling work? The process of water borehole drilling can be broken down into four steps.

Stage 1: A hydrogeologist will first need to visit the intended borehole site and assess its geophysical properties. They will identify where the water is located and how it can be reached.

Stage 2: The water borehole will then be drilled in line with the hydrogeologist’s recommendations, and subsequently cased with steel, stainless steel, PVC or a combination of all of them.

Step 3: A test pump will then be installed, and the borehole will be tested on a range of variables. This will determine the impact of certain controlled changes on the overall borehole water level.

Step 4: Finally, an appropriate pumping and piping system will be installed into the borehole.

How much space is needed for a water borehole?

Water boreholes can be installed in both rural and urban settings and, quite often, they don’t take up as much space as you might think. For example, domestic boreholes will usually fit on a small driveway and they are typically designed to be 40-70m deep and 150mm 200mm in diameter.

Commercial boreholes are slightly bigger, measuring 250mm to 450mm in diameter; however, they are not quite as deep (100m) and they still require a minimal amount of space. The borehole will also be fitted with a discreet manhole cover, thus making it safe to walk and drive over.

What equipment is used for water borehole drilling? Dependent on the condition of your ground soil and the depth of water, a number of different drill types can be used in the well-drilling process. For example, an auger drill is often used to dig shallow wells in soft soil, whereas an air core drill will be employed to dig deep holes in poor soil conditions.

In addition to the drill rig, other specialist equipment is required to drill down and extract the excess soil – including hydraulic winches, mud pumps, and air compressors, to name just a few.

What are the advantages of a water borehole? Water boreholes are a fantastic alternative to using mains water, especially if you use large volumes of water and experience poor quality, unreliable supply. It will give you access to safe, clean water, with a consistent level of pressure, and it will save you a significant amount of money over time.
